Large Earthenware Pitcher Suzanne Ramié Madoura

Suzanne Ramié (1905-1974)
 Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Lyon between 1922 and 1926, decoration and ceramics sections, Suzanne Ramié began her career as a textile designer in Lyon before moving to Provence in the mid-1930s. She was introduced to the art of ceramics with the potter Jean-Baptiste Chiapello ( 1888-1949) then opened his own workshop in Vallauris in 1938, the Madoura workshop, an acronym made up of the first letters of the words house, Douly and Ramié. Breaking with the tradition of utilitarian objects produced by local potters, she produced works with refined and original shapes and became one of the key figures of Vallauris. She is also known for her artistic links with Pablo Picasso, whom she welcomed into her studio in 1946 and to whom she taught the art of enamel and clay firing.
